Jose Mourinho doesn’t make throwaway comments. He doesn’t do off-the-cuff. Jose readied himself to face the press as he readied himself to face the opposition. He knew what his objective was. There wasn’t much left to chance.

So when, following the first leg between Chelsea and Inter Milan he was queried about Petr Cech’s fitness for the rematch, his reply would have probably been as thoughtfully planned as an attacking set-piece. Mourinho said, “Of course I think Cech could play. I don’t listen to those reports that he’s out for a month or more.”

For added emphasis, maybe Jose could have made a mime show of covering up his mouth, then hitting his wrist and stating, ‘Oops, silly me, now I’ve let the cat out of the bag.’ He may even feel disappointed about not doing that simply because his crafty slur didn’t have the effect he sought. No one was really aware of such a subtly placed hint that Chelsea FC might have a medical professional that is injecting their footballers back to health. This will certainly teach Jose to be subtle.
